Onwards to Chile

After the wine tour we had a day of doing not very much. Main activities involved sitting in the plaza, wandering around, eating ice cream and drinking coffee. Our favourite activities! In the evening we had a team cooking session with the biggest salad ever, lots of wine, steak and potatoes! David, Erin, Carolyn, Aaron, me, Alexa, Jan: Dinner turned into drinks outside where James and Chris joined us and drinks soon turned into clubbing. We went out about 2am ish...I didn´t go to bed until 8.15am.

Unfortunately for most people check out was at 10am which is completely unreasonable! I had approximately 1.5hr sleep before we packed up and went to the bus station. Eventually we found a bus to Santiago and had possibly the most beautiful bus ride there. It was stunning mountain/moonlike scenery! I was asleep for most of it though :-( In Santiago we jumped straight on a bus to Valparaiso and crashed in a little hospedaje right opposite the bus station. Most excitingly we had a big tv with MTV so we watched too many episodes of "My Sweet Sixteen" and ate soup!
The next day we wandered around Valparaiso which is supposed to be gorgeously picturesque. It was quite foggy over the sea which was cool but I didn´t think it outstandingly stunning.

After riding on a few of the ancient elevators and getting some good views over the town we decided to check out Viña del Mar. It´s the next town along from Valparaiso with nice beaches and a more upmarket feel. I thought it was a more handsome town. We were nearly dying of hunger by this point so we got the first thing we found - a hot dog. According to Bone´s lonely planet reading, the hot dog is a Chilien speciality. I don´t like them but it was quite good.
Viña del Mar:

That is mayonaise on top, not cheese, very upsetting:
That evening we asked our hosts where was good to eat and went to said restaurant. It was very like a greasy American diner...not what I´d had in mind. Afterwards, we were very excited about the TV and watched Oceans Twelve before dinner and Sense and Sensability after dinner. We had to avoid requests of the host family for us to go out clubbing with their son who spoke no English and we had never met, very embarrasing!
Next day we went to Santiago and booked into La Casa Roja. It´s an awesome hostel, so good that noone really has much desire to venture outside. We did of course, but we really haven´t done anything touristy in Sanitago apart from visit the beautiful cathedral and post office!

We have been here 3 days getting everything organised for leaving South America. I quite like Santiago but I think that is mainly because of the people I have been with and the hostel. Actually, I´ve found Santiago to be one of the worst places for men. We get whistled at/called beautiful/blatently stared at by practically every single man and that´s not an over exageration. What are we going to do in New Zealand with noone to tell us we´re beautiful every 2mins!?!?! We had one good night out last night with a huge group from the hostel which was a great last night in this continent. I can´t explain how much I have enjoyed travelling here...I may shed a tear when we take off however much I am looking forward to New Zealand.
I so badly want to come back and I haven´t even left yet.
